What is Heart Failure?
Heart failure (HF) is a disease with symptoms that can range from mild to very serious. In essence, the heart has become "sick". Left untreated, fifty percent of heart failure sufferers die within the first 5 years of their diagnosis. But with education, treatment and comprehensive management, the effects of HF can be minimized. That's why it's so important to see your doctor and receive evaluations on a regular basis, especially if you are experiencing any symptoms of heart failure.
How does Heart Failure occur?
The pumping action of the heart delivers oxygen and food to organs. Congestive heart failure or heart failure occurs when the heart is not efficiently pumping blood throughout the body and to vital organs. The decreased blood flow typically causes the human heart to increase in size, making the heart even less efficient. Left untreated, the diseased heart continues to enlarge and weaken.
Additionally, as the heart pumps less efficiently, fluid that is normally transported through veins backs up or accumulates in body tissues, further increasing the load on the diseased heart. If the load continues to increase, the heart becomes overly strained and weakens, which can result in heart failure and death.
